ps Vita vs Psp
The PS Vita is Sony’s new handheld gaming device. It looks to follow on the footsteps of arguably one of the most successful mobile gaming platform, the PlayStation Portable (PSP). What does the PS Vita has in store for gamers? Here is our first ever gaming device comparison, PS Vita vs. PSP, after the jump.
There are a number of PSP models out there but we would be using the best model, PSP 3000, for this comparison. The PS Vita runs on a quad-core ARM Cortex processor and a SGX543MP4+ Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). All these are improvements on what is found on the older PSP 3000 which has a CPU with clock speed of 333 MHz and a GPU with clock speed of around 167 MHz. This only means that the PS Vita can support games that have very high resolutions.
Speaking of resolutions, the PS Vita has 960 by 544 pixels, 5-inch OLED screen that is able to render 16:9 aspect ratios. The screen is a capacitive-type touchscreen capable of supporting multitouch functions. In contrast, the PSP 3000 has a 4.3 inch, 16:
The PS Vita contains the standard PlayStation buttons (square, circle, x, triangle) as well as two shoulder buttons (R and L) and start and select buttons. Two analog sticks are also present with the D-Pad, and the PS Menu button. As already mentioned, the PS Vita features a touchscreen panel but it can only be used in menu navigation. Another multi-touch touchpad is found on the rear of the device. Accelerometer and Gyroscope sensors are present allowing you to control games by tilting the Vita, just like on several Android games.
There is no internal storage for the PS Vita which means you have to rely on external media for saving your games and other multimedia content. In retrospect, the previous PSP models including the 3000 have very little internal memory. Only the PSP Go had a decent internal memory at 16 GB.
The PS Vita goes away from the UMD disks as it comes with its own unique memory card known as NVG, which has capacities of 4 GB to 32 GB. Since it is unique to the Vita, you cannot exchange games between it and the PSP 3000 which used Memory Stick PRO Duo and Memory Stick Micro cards.
The PSP 3000 connects to the PlayStation Network (PSN) via Wi-Fi IrDa. Connecting to the Network allows you to access Friends Lists and messaging features besides buying games, movies, comics and music. Depending on the model, you can connect to the PSN with the PS Vita through Wi-Fi or 3G.
The PS Vita is priced at $250 for Wi-Fi Only Model and $300 for 3G Model via AT&T. The PSP 3000 is priced at around $130. Only a few PS Vita games are announced as of now and their prices range from $30 to $50.
What happens when you combine the PSP with an Android tablet? A PS Vita comes out. The touchscreen feature is not new in gaming but the rear touch panel is unique. If you are shifting from PSP to PSP Vita, you will not have a hard time learning the controls. But for those new to PSP and PlayStation games in general, you might be confused of the multiple control options present. Nevertheless, the PS Vita offers a gaming experience that only it can provide.
